Funny Questions for Muslim Women

When I first entered Islam, I began working as a cashier at my local Wal-Mart. I was the only visible Muslim at that store. I was asked many funny questions all having to do with me wearing a head covering - hijab. Here they all are: Are you ill, honey? Did they put you too close to the door? Are you cold? Where are you from? (When I answered I was from California, the lady asked again where did I come from originally, to which I replied that I was born in Indiana, the USA.) Are you from Iraq? Why are you wearing that thing on your head? Only one person acknowledged it correctly; she asked if it was part of my religion, and, of course, I said that it was.
She then said that she knew I must be Muslim. I have always been happy to answer any questions someone might have about my hijab and why I wear it. Alhamdoulillah.

Marrying more than one wife

Muslim men do not marry more than one wife just to do so. If the first wife is ill and can not perform her wifely duties or she cannot bear children then she can agree to her husband to marry another. Marrying more than one wife you have to be fair with all the wives and if you can't, marry just one is what Allah says.

Do you get hot wearing all that?

My favorite question that I get from non-muslims is: "Do you get hot wearing all of those clothes?" I tell them that sometimes we wear lighter fabrics, like linen and cotton in the summer, and heavier fabrics, like wool, or layers in the winter.

Self-hate?

Why do you hate yourself? (My response: Because the Western media tells you she hates herself).

Afghan Clothing

Prior to the Afghan war I noticed females with their faces covered & a round face cover at the mouth. What is this & where can I see a picture of one? [Moderator Reply: The Afghan-style covering is commonly called a "burqa." You can see an example of one on our Islamic clothing glossary page: http://islam.about.com/od/dress/tp/clothing-glossary.htm]

Marrying more than one wife

As a muslim woman, I have been asked so many times how I would feel if my husband marries another woman. I tell them sincerely from my heart that I would not be very happy. Of course most non-muslims are happy to hear that and they will definitely want to hear more. That is my strategy. So when we sit down and relax, I continue by explaining to them that if we live by denying ourselves some of the pleasures of this world we will attain greatness in the next world. As Muslims that is our ultimate goal. Most women don't want to share their husbands but Allah says "share" if the need arises. Since to obey Allah and whatever he tells us to do is primary, we obey. He tells us to give out of what He has given to us no matter how much we want for ourselves, we obey. He tells us sex is allowed only after marriage no matter how much you want to, we obey. Do not drink, we obey. All of these I tell them before I go into the social and biological circumstances when it may be recommended for a man to marry more than one wife.
